Monthly Archive for July, 2008

i’m on vacation…

…to a place with sand, water, and females who look like video vixens. so i’ll holler at everybody on monday. i just got that itinerary, and it’s looking like i’m about to rack up a few frequent flyer miles:

6 am!? goodness. i’ll be on chill mode, regardless. no updates for a minute.

i’ll be there. i swear to god. don’t ask me how i finagled it, but just call it a gift from a family member. i found out today that it was official with an e-mail in the inbox. i earned it.

as i celebrate the end of summer school and take in the last four weeks of summer time, i encourage everybody to go out with a bang. do everything you haven’t done yet, before this good weather disappears.

“it feels good to see another summer…”

to stay occupied, dig deep into the archives. i have some cool stuff in there, i promise. also, hit that blogroll on the left-hand side. i got plenty of vicious sites to keep you busy while i’m out of commission.

AND, all DMV artists, whether you’re known around the area or not, send me music so i can make the most crucial july/august 2008 DMV mixtape of all time. if you can do that for me, then we’re in business. the june joint is a few posts below this, so scoop it. shout out to 2 dope boyz for keeping it trill with me, and getting me more traffic than the highways in LA. and dylan for making the crucial cover art for that DMV joint. and JD for launching those blast off mixtapes into the atmosphere. the biggest shout out, however, goes to anna fish, who made allllll the artwork you see affiliated with DC to BC. she’s grinding out there. get at her if you need some work done. and to everybody sending e-mails our way: i’ll get back to you all eventually.

peace.

reggae fest.

my man dj meistro just passed me Ram di Dance 1 & 2 for your reggae listening enjoyment. the DC based spinning pro mixed up some classic, early 90’s reggae with some current dancehall jams. featured on Turntable Lab (and in their retail stores). big up to the multi-talented Dave Nada for the A+ cover art! who says DC doesn’t support reggae/dancehall, anyway?

back when albums used to matter.

jay smooth, the guy who runs illdoctrine.com, arguably the greatest hip hop blog of all time, is a genius. don’t be surprised by his demeanor or anything. trust me, he always knows what he’s talking about.

in this current TV special (sidenote: i used to work for current. they broke me off a serious check, too. so i’m a fan for life), he breaks down the good ol’ days that i never really enjoyed because i’ve been downloading music since the minidisc player was the most exclusive gadget on the market. yeah, that’s throwback. i’m a 90’s baby. so sue me. anyway, listen to the man preach the good word! what a hip hop philosopher.

off the wall.

see my man on the left? that’s michael jackson. originator of the shiny suit, if you ask me. he had people passing out in concerts. when somebody does that again, then they can compare to him. the woman on the right was kinda crucial, too.

i just wish MJ had better accountants, so his money would be right. photo jacked from lateboots.

“life ain’t so bad at all if you live it off the wall”

boy betta know!

if you don’t know about grime music, you’re about to be put on (no jeezy or yeezy). half my family lives in london, so i was put onto the early acts like so solid crew at a young age. now the game has evolved, and you have these guys murdering microphones with wreckless abandon.

take the time out of your day to hear these guys spit. if you don’t appreciate it, i don’t know what to tell you. watch the joints in order. you should start to go crazy around 3:20, when JME starts to spit.

JME, skepta, and frisco. frisco’s the weakest link (you’ll know who he is soon), but he is still doing the damn thing. i will post some grime to download in like a week, so you don’t have to keep coming back to the blog to hear the flows. if you’re desperate, let dylan hold you over for a bit.

thoughts!? can this genre make it to the US?

shout out to chuka!

j. cole - i get up [audio]

if for some reason you didn’t feel him the first time, you will this time around.

this is monumental music, and i’m honored to be the guy to leak it. it’s so vicious that i’m tempted not posting anything else on this blog today. that way, it’ll be the only thing on everybody’s mind. unfortunately, i need to post a few things, but i feel like hope that by the end of the day, one of the big dog blogs would have snatched it, talking about “did you hear about that guy j. cole?”

yerp. that’s how i’m going. he reps fayetteville, NC as hard as fresh prince reps west philly. and furthermore, he makes all of his own beats. like this joint.

the 22-year old providence, RI resident recently praised all over hip hop forums and blogs (including a co-sign from lupe fiasco himself) gets busy over a beat that samples his own name. what better way to get the world to remember you, theo? off the birth, his newest mixtape that drops on 8.8.08 via okayplayer.

haven’t heard of a.b. yet? that’s fine. he’s a producer by trade, but that doesn’t stop him from putting out his own music. this synth-heavy ode to swag will have even the lamest dude feeling like superman when it comes to pulling chicks. the DC born and bred beatsmith is also responsible for his src/universal recording artist marky’s hit single, “sheila.” play this joint loud; your speakers will thank you.

enjoy.
