what were you doing when the towers collapsed?

i feel like people have forgotten that this is a day america was tested. there’s more coverage on kanye’s arrest today than 9-11’s anniversary. i don’t even know if that’s a bad thing, to be honest, but worth mentioning at least.

do you remember what you were doing?

i didn’t want people to feel obliged to read my stuff, so i’m putting it here.

to keep it real, it was like my 4th day of high school, and i was in english class. our loudspeakers went on, and somebody said “a plane has hit the world trade center, and investigators beileve it is in relation to a terrorist attack on the US.”

how the fuck are you supposed to feel when you hear that? my parents work for the world bank. are they tryna take those buildings out too?

we rushed out of the class to the library, where a makeshift TV was put up updating everything regarding the situation. it was insane. cell phones couldn’t connect. people were screaming, crying. parents were showing up at school unannounced, begging and pleading to take their kids home. after a while, they let everybody go. the entire campus was emotionally drained. morale was low. and we all felt like shit had hit the fan, and we weren’t gonna be safe at home. this was just the first phase, and they had some more fire power coming. who was they, anyway?

that’s just how my mind was working. frantically.

That was a crazy day…. I remember shooting around with Jessica listening to the Blueprint at the court near my house in Potomac and out of no where a plane landed next to it.. That’s when I knew this was the real deal….

I was skipping class and the school secretary stopped me in the hall to let me know what happened. My immediate thought was, “Again!?”. The rest of the day was a blur. My mother picked me up during lunch. She was frantic. My oldest brother at the time was in the Army. We just thought WW3 was about to happen. I came home and watched all of it on television. It was awful. I don’t ever want to feel like that again.

i was in gatlingburg tn on vacation with my mom. it was our 1st day there. i was on the phone on hold, the news broke in over the radio. the wtc tower was on fire, yelled down to her to turn on the t.v. by the time i got downstairs in just a few, she was crying saying “we’re at war”. to see my mom cry like that is something i’ll never forget, i just held her and let her cry. i took care of her that day, making sure we left to eat & do our day. looking back, sometimes i can’t remember how i felt, i was just taking care of her. that’s probably a blessing.

i was at school and i remember not even registering the impact of what i just saw. it was just some planes going into buildings. i didnt think about all the people on the planes, all the people in the buildings. it didnt hit until the towers fell and i saw people walking through clouds of smoke and residue with no expressions sort of like zombies. then i started thinking about those last calls made to loved ones and all the courage those people had and all the hatred thats out there for someone you dont even know. it makes me mad, as does all acts of violence, to think that you could ever believe that you have the right to choose for someone else whether they live or die. but ignorance was bliss. you never know how it truly feels til it happens to you or someone you love. i was lucky

I live on the west coast, and for some reason I watched the news before I went to school, so I watched the second plane crash into the tower and I have a vivid memory of everyone being lost, confused and terrified. I went to school for like two hours while they tried to preoccupy us with random games. My parents came back to get me before lunch. I don’t think it registered until watching the whole thing play out on the news afterwards and after talking to my brother who was in the reserves and ready to go.

It’s sad that we spend so little time on the many that lost their lives that day and are still dying today in what is supposed to be “the war against terrorism”. It’s a shame we have a short memory and attention span. The world changed that day.

probably the scariest day of my life,

i was at public school in Manhattan, I was in english class laughing and joking with everybody else when there was like a hugh sound and a couple minutes later, a whole bunch of dust and stuff went past our window. it was crazy. we started running to the gym and stayed there during the fall of the second building.

In AP Modern European History class, Senior year in high school. Thought the second plane was a replay. Crazy shit.

I remember stepping out the shower and seeing my brother and mom watching the news report. (fox 11)
I think the following week was also when I realized how under educated my neighborhood was. Rumor has it the only middle eastern kid anyone knew got jumped by a couple of cholos. After that there were news reports of a man getting beat to near death by some white kids who thought he was middle eastern, turns out he was mexican.

I was watching the buildings fall from my classroom.

I was in 7th grade at NCS in chapel, literally in the midst of saying a prayer when a teacher comes running in screaming at the top of her lungs that a plane had just crashed into the twin towers. That was middle school so everyone in the 7th and 8th grade was sitting together with the majority of our teachers in a room. And when we heard the news everyone just kind of sat there stone faced for what felt like hours. The teachers were standing around staring at us with expressions on their faces like their training hadn’t prepared them to deal with emergency situations like that. Even though it wasn’t happening like right next door or anything, I’m pretty sure that everyone had that same immediate gut wrenching feeling of loss that I had. It was like the air had gotten stuck at the top of everyone’s throat before it could hit their voice box. And then another plane crashed!!!! That’s when all hell broke loose. The few efforts teachers were trying to make to calm people down ended abruptly. It was craziness. Everybody was on their cell phone on their own agenda. I was soo scared trying to call all of the people that I felt like I needed to hear from immediately and not being able to reach anybody. That was probably the only time in my life I’ve been amongst a screaming crowd and felt I was completely alone. I had such mixed emotions that day. I never even finished the prayer I was saying when I first heard the news.

New kid in the class/school in my 10th grade English class. Moved from Brooklyn 2 months prior. The whole day; I pretty much just thought a small plane made an accident and crashed into the building and the teachers did not want to alarm us. The reality struck when moms picked me up from the bus-stop and was crying and told me it was terrorists and planes were hijacked. At that point; I thought the world was coming to an end especially when the phones lines was tied up when I was calling friends in NYC and bombing started in the Middle East that evening….scary day!

  15. 15 Dina-Bina

I was a freshman in high school.

I remember walking to the bus stop, looking up at the sky and seeing nothing but perfect blue: no clouds. It was warm, bright… I remember thinking what a beautiful day it was.

When the first plane hit, I was sitting in Local/State/National Government class. Our teacher turned on the TV; as we were watching the news report, we saw the second plane hit. I remember being shocked and confused. School ended early; maybe it was after the news of the other two planes. Maybe it was after the Towers fell…

I thought about my uncle, who was a flight attendant. I remember turning off the news because the constant replay of the towers falling started making me feel sick.

I was in China and i didnt even know it happened for a minute, actually til i got online that day, cuz nobody was talkin bout it, they didnt care that much on the moment but i think it is that back then China wasnt that open and u couldnt even get CNN that easy…
And i went to the shop to cop The Blueprint though

I was in my 7th grade History class back in Lanham, MD. I was so scared for my life that day, especially since we were so close to VA and the Capital; I didn’t know if DC was gonna be next. We watched the constant news updates in our class until we were all moved to the gym. I know all my family in Detroit we’re trying to call me and my mother, but they couldn’t get through the lines. That day is still so haunting to me especially since many of my friends lost family in the Pentagon attack.

  18. 18 DCBG

by terrorist you mean the government right? six of the highjackers that were reportedly on the plane that crashed into the towers are still alive today…research is key. This was all a scam and plan to enter the US into War again…war means the people behind the curtain (the people who control the central bank) get paid big bucks…its unfortunate people were murdered by the same people that swear to protect us…how did the remains of the plane that hit the pentagon just magically disappear within hours, did you ever see remains of a burnt plane on the news. The sheraton Hotel which sit directly accross from the Pentagon had footage of the pentagon explosion, there were no planes in their footage. It was later confiscated by FBI agents.

If you look at photos of the twin towers post destruction, you’ll see the steel mainframes are shaped at an odd angle, the angle represents a demolition style approach used when buildings are destroyed…it’s scientifically impossible for those industrial strength steel beams to be melted by fuel, charges were strategically placed…hence, people heard explosions from the basement before the second plane even hit. THERE IS NO OTHER EXPLANATION FOR THOSE BUILDINGS TO FALL DEMOLITION STYLE…think about it, then read about it…research people, only trust your own.

I was in class that day when the teacher made the announcement. He claimed he saw fighter jets and Airforce 1 fly past the school. (In Queens). I definately thought it was WW3 status…. our parents had to come and pic us up.

I lost a friend in those towers.. (RIP Stephanie)

I was in my algebra II class, and when we came back from lunch my teacher told us what happened. I just remembered being so damn scared.

One thing i hate bout 9/11 is all them fags acting like it was some sort of conspiracy….Like motherfuckers cant even respect death and all those people who dies….Around here we keep hearing about how the U.S GVT, the israeli secret services did it….I just think its undecent….I mean thousands of people died that day and they acting like it never happened….

I remember clearly I was on base at the Norfolk Naval Air Station (VA) when the shit went down, in class actually. I actually saw the second plane hit while LIVE on TV - that shit had me bugging. About 5 minutes after everything went down, they basically shut the whole base down, and went on the highest alert. I had to run out and go on watch, which was manning a .50 cal at the entrance to the base, this was after doing what my job consisted of and launching our on alert aircraft. Mind you I was scared shitless, even behind a big ass .50 cal machine gun. The shit was mad tense for everyone.

I was at home. I overslept. MY father called me and woke me up. He said someone had bombed the Pentagon. I spent the day watching various news channels. My girl came over when she finished school. I wasn’t scared at all. I actually was annoyed that the people on the news were doing such a bad job getting out accurate information. First they said there were 8 planes still in the air, then 4, then 1. There was a false report that the State Department had been bombed. It made me think that everyone was inept, from the military that was supposed to actually protect the Pentagon to the media.

I had more of an emotional response to the levee failures in New Orleans, personally. That was a whole city under siege and it lasted for a week, as opposed to taking place over a few hours. Much more traumatic. Worse, it showed me that despite spending billions on Homeland Security, we are not secure at home and there’s no real plan in place to help people in serious emergencies.

Maybe I’m desensitized because I’m older and I remember the crack era and I’ve watched all types of war footage where we bombed other countries into oblivion. I still think you’re way more likely to get killed by a regular person from the hood (or second hand smoke or a car accident) than by a terrorist attack, but I suppose the media can make people more scared of certain things than others.

I get kind of sad thinking how much attention 9/11 gets when New York City is just fine now and parts of New Orleans STILL look like post-WWII Hiroshima.

  29. 29 spirit equality

that last message was no disrespect to everyone who died in the towers and the pentagon, it’s just amazing to me how people already seem to have forgotten about katrina when it happened three years ago and large parts of new orleans are still ruined.

granted, the towers haven’t been rebuilt, but whole *neighborhoods* in new orleans are strewn rubble. an american city hasn’t been destroyed in any of our lifetimes, but i don’t see anyone posting about that on any blog on august 29th, which perplexes me.

  30. 30 modi

damn. good ass point, slim. i completely had no idea august 29th was an important date in history.

  31. 31 spirit equality

Are you trying to be sarcastic or is the death of thousands of people and the destruction of an american city not considered ‘history’ by you?

I notice that the media tells people which lives are more important: mostly black working class people versus mostly white finance professionals = one tragedy is forgotten, one tragedy is ‘historic’.

I think you should get an idea that August 29th is a very important date in history.

  32. 32 modi

lol nah, i’m serious…so i hope everything after that first paragraph isn’t sass! now i get the idea. isn’t that why you posted it in the first place? to put people on, a la jeezy & yeezy?

  33. 33 DrSpaceman

I think its pretty simple. The difference between 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina is that no one attacked New Orleans. People were killed by a plane hitting a building on purpose. That still blows my mind, plus we all have seen the video coverage of Both planes hitting the towers further inculcating this atrocity into our collective psyche.
