hip hop DX reports that a direct-to-DVD sequel to new jack city is in the works. but wait! barry michael cooper, creator of the original screenplay, is furious about this! find out why.

cooper revealed to DX that director mario van peebles would not be directing this sequel, and characters such as chris rock, ice-t, and wesley snipes are nowhere to be found in the scripts (editor’s note: i love wesley, but isn’t he in jail? he couldn’t be in the movie if he wanted to!).

he believes franchising such a movie is a great business move for the studio, but a kick in the face to those who created a classic, gangster film that inspired and motivated several of today’s moguls.

“I know Warner Brothers is not only in the business of making movies, they are in the business of making money. So on that level, I understand why they want to make a sequel of New Jack City as fast and as cost-efficient as possible. But New Jack City is a franchise, and a movement and a template. If there was no New Jack City, there would be no Nino-swagger available for Sean Carter, Sean Combs, Dwayne Carter, and Clifford Harris to study and become Jigga, Diddy, Lil Wayne, and T.I. There would be no Paid In Full, and there would be no The Wire. So for Warner to do a direct-to-DVD New Jack City without Wes Snipes, Al Payne, Ice-T, Chris Rock, Mario Van Peebles, and myself, is almost like doing the Godfather II with the cast of ’70s sitcom Barney Miller. It’s a stinker. But it is what it is.”

damn, homie. that’s a major $#!t stain in the film’s artistic integrity. hopefully this situation will be sorted out. either that, or the film’s cast is so on point that we forget the fact that we just bought bought it for 5.99 at target.

don’t forget the classic, though. and never mess with nino brown.
