what’s the first album you ever purchased?

really though. i want to know the first joint you scooped from your local sam goody, tower records and every other record spot you used to frequent that bloggers like me put out of business. i miss those days when albums used to matter.

mine? DMX’s “it’s dark and hell is hot.” and then mariah carey’s “butterfly.” never mind. it was mickey unrapped. i forgot about that one. oh boy.

don’t act like it didn’t have thumpers on it! literally. i’m talking thumpers like the rabbit from bambi. but for real though, some people still get my money, you just gotta go above and beyond for me to shell it out.

i want to know what you were jamming way back when. go check out the stacks of CD cases behind your bed or on your desk, you know it’s somewhere in there. let me know what you’re working with…everything from first purchases to honorable mentions to “wtf was i doing buying this joint!?” like my mickey unrapped. here’s a preview though. it really did knock.

Harlem World- Ma$e

Big Willie Style- Will Smith

It was a combo package, like the those jordans, You want the 7’s but they come with the 16’s,so it wasn’t like I could ditch the Will Smith CD for the Harlem World CD joint, but after I listened to the Will Smith joint, and that Miami song. I realized that I didn’t actually make a huge mistake..South beach bringin tha heat.. Oh can’t forget the getting jiggy wit song

Harlem World? WOW, Lookin at me, “I don’t like when Im in the club and Im wit my honey, You got, you know the haters, ( hi hater) they wanna be tough guys all of a sudden hit you wit the ice grill cuz your boys aint wit you little do they know your girl roll harder than some of your niggas”

Okay it was either The Lion King Soundtrack, or N’SYNCS first album when Justin TimberFlake looked like a greasy little boy with rubber band arms.

I listen to The Circle of Life when i’m driving…

#6 A Fish on 08.04.08 at 3:41 PM

the Space Jam soundtrack.

yup, i got a basketball jones…….

that collection was fire from start to finish. and yes, Harlem World and Big Willie Style AND the MJ history cds eventually followed. But before that it was all about “MJ, 23 ways to make u pay, loungin in my mothership back around my way…..”

#7 allienicole.blogspot.com on 08.04.08 at 3:42 PM

that would be faith evans. or maybe it was the soul food soundtrack?

#8 anya on 08.04.08 at 3:44 PM

I also recall having mj like gloves and shoes that I would put on when I watched his dangerous video cassette that I got for my birthday, those were good times…

I can’t help but smile when I think of the stuff I use to bump in my boom box.

I’m proud to say my first CD I ever purchased was Mariah Carey’s Daydream from disc-go-round.

The other early CD’s you can find in my album case that might tarnish my cool:

The Rugrats Movie Soundtrack (Don’t act like you didn’t eff wit that Mya ‘Take me there’ Jam too!)

Disney Hero Songs (came in a McDonald’s Happy Meal)
Disney Villian Songs (came in a McDonald’s Happy Meal)

The Lion King Soundtrack

Space Jam Soundtrack (Bet you didn’t even know Bugs Bunny had flow)

Britney Spears’ first 3 albums

*NYSNC’s first 3 albums

Space Jam Soundtrack (Bet you didn’t even know Bugs Bunny had flow)

#10 Dr. Quandary on 08.04.08 at 4:06 PM

I was big into the Beatles as a kid, and my dad, having been a member of many blues rock bands throughout the psychedelic age, encouraged this by buying me CDs. By the time I was ten I had just about every Beatles LP, and he was starting to move me into Zep and Hendrix territory. Don’t get me wrong, though — I was still blasting Rosenschantz, Raffi and Sharon, Lois & Bram like it was nobody’s business. BABY BELUGA SON. WHAT.

However, the first two CDs I can remember buying for MYSELF were the “Waterfalls” maxi-single by TLC and the “Woo-Hah!” maxi-single by Busta. I went on to cop CrazySexyCool as my first full-length purchase shortly after.

#11 Ashlee on 08.04.08 at 4:38 PM

Um wow…great post!

My first joint was definitely “Brandy” her self titled CD. That joint came out when I was like 5 lol. And I loooooved it. There are two of my favorite jams on there. “I wanna be down” and “brokenhearted”. goodness, that brings back some memories.

I’m sure CrazySexyCool couldn’t have been far behind that, but Brandy was definitely the first.

And I definitely remember Maxwell’s Urban Hang Suite not being far behind…

OMG and how could I forget E 1999 Eternal BONE THUGS N HARMONY. Joint came out in like 95. **Best Bone Thugs album ever** I was such a little wannabe gangsta back then lls. 1st of the Month was and still is one of my favorite songs ever. It looked so out of place in the middle of all the female artists.

And then many years later when I was like 12 or something. Snoop Doggs album Tha Last Meal came out and I got it for christmas, I was SICED.

#12 makkah on 08.04.08 at 4:46 PM

Mine was a Barbie exclusive that came with the black doll. Next was the Spice Girls. Oh how so little has changed…

#13 SKY2G on 08.04.08 at 5:42 PM

Street Fighter The Movie Soundtrack. I got it for Christmas. The first CD i purchased with my own money was “Opposite Of H2O” by Drag-On. Yeah, i know.

#14 Mr. Goode on 08.04.08 at 6:09 PM

first album i ever paid for was a kid capri cd from a minute ago. i remember after listenin i thought it was no where near as tight as he sounded on def comedy jam.

#15 Tay on 08.04.08 at 6:12 PM

TLC Crazy Sexy Cool.

Because I was just that cool, with my overalls and lion king sweatshirt. Not to mention the light up sneakers- oh so fresh.

#16 Aristotle on 08.04.08 at 6:17 PM

HMMM…12′ vinyl of Midnight Marauders by Tribe Called Quest. I wanted to be a DJ so bad. Still cant…lol

#17 reading on 08.04.08 at 6:29 PM

The first cassette that I bought with my own money was Da Brat’s “Funkdafied”. The hell was I thinking lol?

My first CD that I bought? Erykah Badu’s “Baduizm”.

Prior to that, my official firsts that I claimed as my own were Johnny Gill’s album with “My, My, My” on it.

#18 mrdylanmichael on 08.04.08 at 6:30 PM

The first album I ever purchased was GFK’s Ironman which is still one of my favorites today. Daytona 500 & All That I Got is You were my lullabies.

But as for first CD, it was a tie between Space Jam, Hunchback of Notre Dame & the Rugrats.

Damn Disney marketed the fuck out of me.

#19 Shoshaawwwnuh on 08.04.08 at 6:49 PM

Woah, ok so I DONT remember the first ALBUM I ever purchased, but I do know that when I was in 4th/5th grade I somehow convinved daddy to get me the double-cassette BIG Ready To Die. I honestly didn’t understand have the shit I was repeating….

#20 Cam on 08.04.08 at 6:50 PM

Oooh I’m so feeling Raqui on that Spcie Girls (bowing my head in shame)! But I think it was like Miseducation, or Let’s Get Free (Dead Prez)… I’ve always been a download junkie. Used to live on Kazaa before I ever walked in a record store.

#21 Pascal on 08.04.08 at 6:52 PM

first album ever….

Confessions of Fire by Cam’ron

he released this under Untertainment back when he was still cool with Murda Mase (Children of the Corn, anyone???) and when he could still rap (sans “Laffy Taffy Tacky Daddy!”) I still bump some tracks from it (”Feels Good” ft. Usher and “Horse and Carriage” ft. Mase) when I’m at the crib.

My second album purchased proves the maturity in my musical taste since then.

#22 Dan on 08.04.08 at 6:59 PM

the first album i ever received was that Tina Turner album with “what’s love got to do with it?” …i had asked for it after i heard it on soft-rock 97.1 (if ur from DC, u know what i’m talking bout) cuz my parents wouldn’t let me listen to any other channel

the first album i ever “purchased” (i did the dishes for a month) was Meloncolly and the Infant Sadness by the Smashing Pumpkins…still a solid album

#23 Marty Mcfly on 08.04.08 at 7:05 PM

I remember getting ginuwine the bachelor and three six mafia chapter two world domination…. those were my tunes and they were great albums had the slow jams and the bass jams had o keep it diverse….

#26 modi on 08.04.08 at 8:00 PM

LOL

that’s a lot of capital O’s tho logan. but uh, the REAL first album i ever jammed was stevie wonder’s innervisions. my dad put me on early. i found it so fucking insane that a blind man could bring me so much colorful music, as cliche and lame as that sounds. he is in competition for best artist of all time in my book. it’s michael and him, and i can’t really remember who else i’ve nominated before, but just know he’s a beast.

and anybody who says ray charles is as good just isn’t bringing a valid argument. his movie was sick though. stevie needs one too.

oh, and i used to jam a charlie brown / wynton marsalis hybrid-cd joint. track 3 was insane. i used to jump around the house so much to that saxophone. OH and my dad put me on michael franks. but i was crazy. i used to jam busta’s E.L.E. (extinction level event) so loud in my house on the living room speakers that i broke glasses. literally. it was crazy. i thought there were demons in the house. if you look at that album cover and listen to it, you’ll understand what i mean.

#27 Chris Foxx of Foxx Files on 08.04.08 at 8:35 PM

Shidd fuck it ain’t no shame in my game. My first album purchase ever was (drumroll please)………….MC Hammer “Please Hammer Don’t Hurt ‘Em” the cassette tape version!! In attempt to get my street cred back my first Compact Disc (CD) purchase ever was Dr. Dre’s The Chronic!!

#28 debbie on 08.04.08 at 8:47 PM

The first album I ever brought was the sound track to the Lion King. A couple of my favorite songs to this day are The Circle of Life and The Mighty King. I am sure most people will agree when I say The Lion King is definitely one of the best Disney movies ever.

#29 Whitney on 08.04.08 at 8:49 PM

The first one I ever purchased was MIsEducation of Lauren Hill… I listened to it every day and wrote down all the words… It was then that I just KNEW I wanted to be a rapper/singer. Even at that age I understood just how heavy that album was and how talented Lauren is… There will never be another album like it!

#30 Mi-Mi on 08.04.08 at 8:58 PM

Omg, I love that CD. Growing up I use to play the Sisqo Cd all the time. I use to go hard on the Thong Song. I remember begging my mom to get me a thong but she hit me with the, “those are what grown folks wear,” speech. Awww man the good old days.

#31 Ms. Fiasco on 08.04.08 at 9:05 PM

My first CD EVER was the soundtrack to “A Goofy Movie”…so we’re kinda on the same page Modi (lmao). The first joint I ever purchased by myself was the Bone Thugs-N-Harmony “Greatest Hits” album…and it was truly worth the $16.99 or whatever ridiculous price they used to charge for CD’s back in the day lol.

#32 theshoelace on 08.04.08 at 9:07 PM

i really aint buy CD’s. . i was still buying records @ the time for DJ’ing and whatnot. . but umm, hmm. . damn, cant even remember really.

Well i was young at the time, i remember getting the Soul 4 Real CD album, it’s really good. . just uploading the album on my comp for Serato, etc.

#37 Young Phatz on 08.04.08 at 10:20 PM

actually the first album i purchased was the Money Power Respect album. Still to this day Kiss is my favorite rapper. One of the best albums ever. Although it is.. on the commerical side.. Still hood.. Couple of tracks yall might wanna hear on the album. Not to be fucked with- Styles, The heist- Kiss and Styles, and who hasnt heard. All for the Love- Kiss. Possibly one of the best albums ever. and a little after that. I purchased the Mos Def black on both sides album and Qtip’s Amplified. Classic Albums too.. IF U HAVENT HEARD THESE ALBUMS.. ITS NOT TOO LATE TO STEP UP YOUR HIP HOP GAME..

#38 realestate on 08.05.08 at 12:15 AM

Yep, the first cassette i EVER bought was LOX Money, Power, Respect. Amazing album that opened my eyes and ears to what lyrics were about. First CD i ever bought, DMX Its Dark and Hell is Hot. Still a classic and arguably one of the best albums EVER made.

#39 shay on 08.05.08 at 12:20 AM

aah i’m pretty sure it wasn’t my first album purchased but i remember N*SYNC no strings attached was up there. i was born into a pop-phase, don’t sass.

i was never really much of a CD collector anywayz, i started downloading at a young age

#40 cousin wale on 08.05.08 at 12:22 AM

The first one I myself purchased? I think it was…hmmm…”The Very Best of Sting and the Police.”

#41 modi on 08.05.08 at 12:29 AM

i have that joint, ironically. but it’s not an original copy. it’s a DL’ed joint i found floating around the internet.

“the bed’s too big without you” is a classic. i need to sample it. in fact, i’ma throw it to arafat yates and let him rock that.

#42 PFOP on 08.05.08 at 12:39 AM

some backsteet boys joint…sold it for a few cents a couple years later. yezzir.

#43 geedubya15 on 08.05.08 at 1:10 AM

I am not positive it was so long ago. I think the first one i bought with myyyy actual money was 112 – Part 3. But I wanna say my first CD i bought was Will Smith – Big Willy Style. Either that or Mariah Carey…during her Honey days. with the bad boy remix. Maan i had the biggest crush in the world on her. Still did……..till she married Nick Cannon.

#44 RecruitZero-SR on 08.05.08 at 1:13 AM

My first album was Make Yourself by Incubus. I was in all types of random music. But this was just the first album I copped from stores. I had quite a few CDs I copped bootleg for 5 dollars down on Nevins and Flatbush. My Brooklyn people know Fulton Street is the place for them deals.

#45 geedubya15 on 08.05.08 at 1:14 AM

OOOOOO shooot….I was rockin that Space Jam album heaaaavy.
OOh and this maybe first CD bought. But my first track I ever had was Kriss Kross…used to stay playin “I missed the bus’!!! woow this def brought me back.

#46 Kbaby on 08.05.08 at 2:19 AM

honestly can’t remember my first album but i know TLC’s crazysexycool and Spice Girls’ “Spice” were some of the early ones…but one album i haven’t seen mentioned yet and i’m hoping im not alone on this one was the Aqua cd with the “Barbie Girl” joint…someone let me kno im not the only one

on another note, doesn’t all this talk of cd’s remind you of the Discman…think about that for a minute…remember when the discman was the hottest thing out, and then the fancy ones had the skip protector…wow haha just thought i’d throw that out there

#47 Boooogie on 08.05.08 at 2:30 AM

damn first album i had was actually a tape of blackstreet and i used to listen to “no diggity no doubt” over and over and over again i swear i know dat shit by heart still… damn i used to be on my r&b shit hard back then lmao

#48 B. on 08.05.08 at 4:27 AM

A Tribe Called Quest’s “The Low End Theory”…I played that joint to death…I would play “Check the Rhyme” like 10 times a day…I think I followed that up with “Big Willie Style” by Will Smith. I don’t care what anyone says, that is a solid album…

#49 Jay Smooth on 08.05.08 at 5:32 AM

first album i ever bought was, err, Hi Infidelity by REO Speedwagon. BUT the second was Marvin Gaye’s Greatest Hits.

I think the first hip-hop purchase was 8th Wonder 12 inch. There were all 1980-1981

#50 modi on 08.05.08 at 9:47 AM

wait a second.

JAY SMOOTH!? you read the blog!?

I think mine was one of the MC Hammer albums. I liked it so much that I had an MC Hammer barbie with the purple pants and the gold frame glasses and MC Hammer/Jodcei was my first concert. Shame.

#53 JG on 08.05.08 at 1:17 PM

Coolio’s Gangsta’s Paradise

Yea man. I got the unedited version and everything. That made me feel like a boss at 9 yrs old. i had to listen to it in secret from my mom. thats real.

#54 modi on 08.05.08 at 1:18 PM

there are no bad words in that entire song though. i know the entire thing. i had the single too.

got’em.

#55 amberj on 08.05.08 at 2:19 PM

i know we’re supposed to be talking about cds BUT the 1st album i got was the salt n pepa CASSETTE that their song Shoop is on. i made my mother play it EVERY DAY in the car on the way to school driving 4 what felt like an like an hour from diamond bar to south central just that one song i have no idea what was on the rest on that tape or on the b-side &&& one day she was so annoyed by me asking her to play it over & over & over that she threw it out of the window while we were on the freeway.

#56 morg on 08.05.08 at 8:57 PM

monica, “before you walk out of my life” was the first (tape) i ever purchased…

#57 Deneen on 08.05.08 at 10:16 PM

Whoa.. First CD was probably Mariah Carey– Daydream… Much love to LL though with the “Loungin (who do you love) remix” tape that also had “two different worlds” on it.. that got played OUT on my walkman. hahaha

#58 Fran. on 08.06.08 at 2:27 PM

hmmm.
Brandy’s self titled album. Or was it the free cd’s McDonalds gave away with a kids meal purchase[i believe it was called "something Groove", idunno]?
Either way, both jnts were like that.

Then, I found out how to download music…illegally. Yikes.
Thanks to mixtapes, I dont feel so bad after all.

But, I must say.
I to miss the days when albums did matter && people like myself knew nothing about downloading music.

#59 'Stais on 08.07.08 at 8:16 PM

wow. this one is taking me back. I, like many other avid readers/posters, first picked up the space jam soundtrack with my own dinero. and maxwell’s urban hang suite was so excellent as my first adult album that I actually grooved to and understood…but my first cassette was Sade’s greatest hits = CLASSIC! wore it out to the point where I had to put my finger in the twist and turn to make sure the reel was properly set in order to play. ahhhhhhh Modi, you’ve done it again, thanks buddy

#60 Goat on 08.08.08 at 5:11 PM

Great Post!
First CD I ever copped was Shaggy’s “Pure Pleasure” album for the song Big Up. Before that I was straight cassette man. Had to test out my brand new Sega CD at the time. LOL yea I’m getting up there.

#61 Toyosi on 08.12.08 at 7:18 PM

This is a very nostalgic question for me because I remember the day exactly…I went to Best Buy with my cousin from Texas, he was in Miami on vacation (visiting with his craziest, sexiest, and coolest cousin…ME!…a foreshadow? maybe). He asked me to pick a CD, anyone I wanted, and of course I picked up the first cd I saw (TLC’s red hot album, CRAZY SEXY COOL), I guess in my little impulsive eight year old mind his offer might of expired in 10 seconds. But he said I should think about it, so I looked around and finally decided on Xscape’s “Traces of my Lipstick” That album rode out from beginning to end…even still to this day.

#62 MM on 08.21.08 at 4:53 PM

i’m late. but in my defense, i’ve been on a grind. . .

first tape i owned, tevin campbell’s album. haha. stole it from my cousin. i loved that album. hahahaha

first tape i had to beg my parents to buy for me was mariah carey’s daydream. then we had to listen to the whole album on our way home from sam goody to make sure there was no foul language. my dad was impressed, so 2 days later he bought me the boyz II men. also a cassette.

first cd(s), bought the two dru hill albums at once: ‘enter the dru’ and ‘dru hill’. mustve had more money as an 11 year old than i do now. shame.

[i love this one modi]

daaamn
on some real shit
the first CD i ever bought (right after i got my first CD Player…damn its been a while) was Big Willie Style by Will Smith.
yo on the real back then Will Smith was my all time favorite. i would jam to his new shit and his old shit. plus he just ended Fresh Prince, so i was wondering what that shit would be like.
then the next joint i bought was the EDITED version of No Way Out by Puff Daddy & the Family. that shit was so ill..bought it cuz of All About the Benjamins…
i don’t remember shit after that cuz i had a collection of like 45 cds and i brought the cd case to school one day in 7th grade, and someone stole it. i was soooo tight. i had to restack everything man. touuuuughhhh…

#69 modi on 10.30.08 at 1:11 AM

i actually got the dirty version of that puff daddy joint, but got the edited DMX “it’s dark and hell is hot” and it was still amazing.

#70 CV to BC? on 10.30.08 at 1:52 AM

man i think i like edited dmx joints better. they’re so much funnier with the BARK and the GRRRRR in place of the swear!!

#71 modi on 10.30.08 at 2:33 AM

exactly. EXFUCKINGXACTLY. but i wouldn’t say funnier. i would say they just sound so much harder. in fact, i need “keep your sh!t the hardest” edited. NOW.

somebody find that for me!!!!!!!

#72 Rel on 10.31.08 at 12:53 AM

had to be DMX Flesh of my Flesh, Blood of my Blood. Great image on the cover. Had no idea what those songs were about, though I thought I did ha. Knew the prayer by heart. Still do.

TLC- Crazy Sexy Cool…(Those were the days)

Bobby Brown’s “Don’t Be Cruel.” I was like 8 or 9, so I guess technically my dad bought it for me. Ha!

#75 DMV Hustler on 11.23.08 at 7:14 PM

I cant remember the FIRST, but I remember the day I bought Biggie’s first album! I was in middle school and bought it from Best Buy with my pops and brother. I also remember buying Raekwon’s first solo album and the soundtrack to Russell Simmon’s first documentary. I cant think of the name right now but remember the cd was black. I smoked too much weed back in them days.
